Renovating can be hugely exciting - but it’s the end result you want to make your heart skip a beat, not the budget overruns or the delayed consents. Like anything, it takes some careful consideration and preparation to ensure it’s a success.
To help you on your planning journey, we’ve compiled a list of things to consider before jumping in.
Define your goals
In the first instance you should identify your needs and wants. Consider what you want to achieve with your renovations - is it a more modern kitchen or another bedroom? Commit these to paper, split them between your must-haves and nice-to-haves and then prioritise what’s the most important to you.
Establish a budget
All projects need a budget so assess your finances and decide how much you’re willing to spend on the renovation - and don’t forget to include a contingency fund for unexpected costs.
If it looks like it’s going to cost more than you thought, consider what other finance options you have. Topping up your home loan is a common way renovations are funded and you can read more about how to go about this here.
Research and gather inspiration
Check out social media, magazines and anything else you can find that sparks your creative brain. Creating a vision board with your ideas and inspiration could also help you visualise your project. I like to use Canva for my vision boards.
It’s also worth reading up on the latest design trends so you understand where the latest materials and technologies could add value. A good design and build team will be able to help you here too.
Consult with professionals
Make sure you engage with a reputable design and build team, and don’t be afraid to shop around until you find someone who understands what you want and how important it is to you.
Aside from the expert advice and high-quality craftsmanship, it’s also important to find a team that can project manage the renovation for you - and of course, someone who is a registered master builder!
Plan and prepare
To avoid costly delays, create a realistic timeline for your project that considers each phase, as well as any necessary consents. They often take longer than you expect so for structural changes, new plumbing or significant alterations in particular, it’s important to get in early as you’ll definitely need the relevant permit.
As a family owned business, the TUIT Design & Build team understands how important your home is and strives to ensure the renovation experience is seamless with clear communication, expert advice and a high-level of craftsmanship.
